Top 5 Tuesday: Top 10 Side Characters

Top 5 Tuesday is a weekly meme created by Bionic Book Worm. This is my first week taking part. You might notice that I have named slightly more than 5 people, and that’s because the topic this week is top 10 side characters which is lucky for me; I’m not sure I could have chosen just 5! So here goes:

Isaac – The Fault in Our Stars by John Green

By virtue of this beautiful passage alone (from Augustus’s prefuneral), Isaac makes it into my top 10 side characters:

When the scientists of the future show up at my house with robot eyes and hey tell me to try them on, I will tell the scientists to screw off, because I do not want to see a world without him.ย

As a quick aside, I loved Nat Wolff’s portrayal of Isaac in the film adaption.

the hunger games

Peeta Mellark – The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

I’m not going to lie, Peeta was probably one of my first proper fictional crushes and for that reason alone, he will always have a special place in my heart! He’s just so sweet and caring and lovely and nice. I should probably stop now!

the lorien legacies.jpg

Nine – The Lorien Legacies by Pittacus Lore

This is a bit of a weird one because loads of characters in The Lorien Legacy get to narrate at least a little but Nine never does so that’s why he’s my favourite side character. I think Nine’s a really interesting character because he comes across as cocky and very sure of himself but underneath all the bravado I think he’s quite vulnerable and he really does care.

lotr

Sam – The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R.Tolkien

A lovely hobbit. Stays by Frodo’s side through everything. Believes in good despite all the bad he has seen. Is the actual hero of The Lord of the Rings. I’d say Samwise Gamgee is a pretty fab side character!

hp

Cedric Diggory – Harry Potter by J.K.Rowling

After watching the films a few times without reading the books, I always forget how much I love book Cedric. Like Peeta, he is just a genuinely nice person, plus he is Hufflepuff so…Hufflepuff pride!

Carry On

Agatha – Carry On by Rainbow Rowell

I just finished Carry On and really surprised myself with how much I like Agatha. I think it’s because she shows that there is no shame in relishing the simple things in life. Agatha is a mage but dreams of doing Normal things and living a Normal life and I really identify with that.

www recently read 23.08

Mauve – One of Us is Lying by Karen M. McManus

There were loads of characters that I loved in One of Us is Lying, but as four of them narrate the novel, I think Mauve has to be my favourite side character. She just seems really cool (I would love to be friends with her in real life) and would do anything for her sister which I can relate to!

raven boys

Ronan – The Raven Boys Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater

I may be cheating a tiny bit here because Ronan does get plenty of coverage in The Raven Cycle but as Maggie Stiefvater is planning/writing a trilogy where Ronan is the main character, I figure he counts as a side character in this series. I just love Ronan because he likes to pretend that he doesn’t care about anyone when actually he is incredibly loving and fiercely protective of his friends and family. Plus his relationship with Adam (Adam could also have easily made it onto this list) and how it progresses throughout the cycle is just amazing!

legend

John Wing – Legend by Marie Lu + Mags from The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

Both of these characters were incredibly selfless and sacrificed themselves for the people they loved so I had to include them both. (I know, it’s a top 10 instead of 5 and I still couldn’t narrow it down!)

The Book Thief

Rudy – The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

Rudy is truly one of the most beautiful and heart-breaking characters I have ever read about. As he narrates the novel Death says of Rudy:

He does something to me, that boy. Every time. It’s his only detriment. He steps on my heart. He makes me cry.ย

Me too Death, me too.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

So there we have it, my top 10…ok 11 side characters. I really enjoyed doing this meme for the first time and can’t wait to tackle another topic!
