Weird question: do you ever listen to music, and in your head you’re dictating a fan video of your favourite fictional character/characters? If you don’t, I highly recommend that you do because it is a perfect way to spend long car/train/bus journeys!
Anyway, I quite frequently take part in this practice, so much so that I thought I might try and make a feature/series on my blog. Basically, every so often, I’m going to present a character/characters with a song/songs that I think sum them up. Simple, right?
My first character is Matthias Helvar the Six of Crows duology by Leigh Bardugo. A quick warning – this post does contain spoilers from both books in the duology, so if you have yet to read them, please do so and then come back!
Matthias (and his feelings about Nina) – A Drop in the Ocean by Ron Pope
This character and song connection is basically the reason I decided to start this series, I just think they fit together so perfectly, both in terms of Matthias himself and his feelings for Nina. Take for example, the chorus of A Drop in the Ocean:
A drop in the ocean
A change in the weather
I was praying that you and me might end up together
It’s like wishing for rain
As I stand in the desert
But I’m holding you closer than most ‘cause you are my heaven
For one thing, the motif of this song is ‘a drop in the ocean’ which I think is incredibly fitting for Nina and Matthias because they saved each other from drowning and that is essentially how their relationship began.
Secondly, the song mentions ‘praying that you and me might end up together’. There is a lot of discussion throughout the duology between Nina and Matthias regarding what they believe in and who they pray to .etc. so this line also made me think of them.
Then, of course, we get to the last line: ‘you are my heaven’. I firmly believe that Nina Zenik is heaven for Matthias Helvar. This line really reminds me of Crooked Kingdom where Matthias tells Nina:
You aren’t a flower, you’re every blossom in the wood blooming at once. You are a tidal wave. You’re a stampede.
Nina is totally his heaven, right? (Also, I need some to tell me I’m every blossom in the wood blooming at once…please?)
Aside from the chorus, there are other sections of this song which really remind me of Matthias and his feelings for Nina. One line states:
I was a boy who loved a woman like a little girl
This reminds me of one of my favourite parts of Six of Crows where Matthias tells Inej that Nina is ‘too much’ prompting Inej to suggest that rather Matthias is ‘not enough.’ At this point in Six of Crows, Matthias isn’t ready to accept Nina for all that she is. But, as the novels continue he grows as a character and loves her because of everything that she is, and not in spite of it, referring to Nina as something more.
Another line in the song references ‘misplaced trust, old friends’, which again links to Matthias because of his relationship with Brum and the other druskelle. This is especially apparent in Crooked Kingdom when the druskelle come to the auction for Kuwei. And, of course, reaches a head when Matthias is shot by a young member of the druskelle.
Speaking of Matthias’s death (literally typing through tears…I am still not over it and nor will I ever be) the middle eight of A Drop in the Ocean consists of a repetition of the line:
Heaven doesn’t seem far away any more
Not only could this reference Nina, as they are an actual couple in Crooked Kingdom and therefore Matthias is closer to his personal heaven, but it also makes me think of Matthias’ death. He is literally closer to heaven as his wolves ‘welcome him home’.
Lastly, I should also mention that A Drop in the Ocean I a great fit for Matthias because it is my favourite song and I absolutely love Matthias Helvar!
So there we have it…the first edition of my new feature! I think I might switch it up a bit with regards to how many characters I look at and how many songs i.e. I might include a couple or a bromance .etc. with either one song between them or a song for each of them. I’ll just have to see!
Thank you for reading, I hope you enjoyed! I really loved finding the connections between the song, the novel and the specific character. To give a small taste for what is to come, I think next I’m planning on looking at a song for Nina about Matthias.
So, what did you think of my new post idea? Do you agree with my song choice? What song do you think perfectly sums up Matthias Helvar? Do you have any songs that must have been written about a favourite character?
As always, happy reading!
