Anyway, onto the quote where today I’ve decided to choose a quote about books rather than from a specific book I love. I’m going to be honest, I literally saw this quote on Tumblr the other day so I don’t know much about it like where its from or whatever, I just know that it’s accredited to Julian Barnes and that when I read it I fell in love.
I think a great book – leaving aside qualities such as narrative power, characterisation, style and so on – is a book that describes the world in a way that has not been done before; and that is recognised by those who read it as telling new truths – about society or the way in which emotional lives are led, or both – such truths having not been previously available, certainly not from official records or government documents, or from journalism or television
If you’ve read this blog before, or even chanced a glance at my username, I’m sure you can guess which book sprang to mind when I read this. It was of course The Book Thief, which is a wonderful, amazing, great book for all the reasons listed above. I’m not sure I would have been able to choose just one quote from The Book Thief to use as part of this tag so everything worked out perfectly!!
